Veteran Advocacy– OAR Foundation (Part Time Volunteer)
Job Description:
The Veteran Advocacy Specialist at the OAR Foundation will be responsible for advocating on behalf of veterans, ensuring they receive the support, services, and recognition they deserve. This role involves researching, identifying, and addressing the needs of veterans, especially those affected by moral injury, PTSD, and other service-related challenges. The Veteran Advocacy Specialist will work with governmental agencies, nonprofits, and other organizations to influence policy and create a more supportive environment for veterans. Additionally, this role will involve educating the public and raising awareness about the challenges veterans face.
Key Responsibilities:

Advocate for veterans' rights, ensuring they receive adequate care, support, and recognition for their service.

Collaborate with governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders to improve resources and services for veterans.

Research and analyze policy issues affecting veterans, including healthcare, mental health, housing, and employment, and develop recommendations for improvement.

Represent the OAR Foundation at advocacy events, meetings, and forums, promoting the foundation’s mission and engaging with policymakers.

Create and implement advocacy campaigns to raise awareness about the challenges veterans face, particularly those struggling with moral injury and PTSD.

Develop educational materials on veterans' issues, including policy changes, available resources, and strategies for improving the lives of veterans.

Work closely with the peer support team to ensure veterans are connected to the necessary services and advocacy resources.

Monitor legislative and policy developments, ensuring the foundation stays up-to-date on relevant changes that may impact veterans.

Build relationships with community leaders, organizations, and other advocacy groups to strengthen efforts and increase support for veterans.

Provide direct advocacy support to individual veterans, helping them navigate bureaucratic systems and secure access to benefits, healthcare, and other services.

Participate in community outreach and public speaking engagements to increase visibility of the foundation and educate the public about the needs of veterans.
Requirements

Strong understanding of veterans' issues, including moral injury, PTSD, healthcare access, and social support systems.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders and effectively represent veterans.

Knowledge of policy and legislative processes, especially as they relate to veterans and military service members.

Ability to advocate effectively for veterans and influence decision-making processes at local, state, and national levels.

Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to stay informed on relevant policy changes and their impact on veterans.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and leadership in advocacy efforts.
