Historical Researcher– OAR Foundation (Part Time Volunteer)

Job Description:

The Historical Researcher at the OAR Foundation will be responsible for gathering, documenting, and preserving the history of the Kabul evacuation and other critical events related to veterans’ service. This position involves conducting research, analyzing historical documents, and creating materials that honor the experiences of veterans. The Historical Researcher will help ensure that the stories of those involved are properly memorialized, shared, and used to inform future generations about the lessons learned from past experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research into the history of the Kabul evacuation, including interviews with veterans, military personnel, and relevant stakeholders.

  • Analyze historical documents, records, and other primary sources to compile accurate accounts of events.

  • Document and preserve the personal stories of veterans involved in the evacuation, ensuring their voices are heard and their experiences are honored.

  • Work closely with the foundation’s team to create educational materials and resources that convey the historical significance of the Kabul evacuation and other related events.

  • Assist in the development of projects that share the history and lessons learned from the Kabul evacuation, including public-facing reports, articles, and memorials.

  • Collaborate with the communications and advocacy team to ensure the history is used to advocate for better support for veterans and to educate future generations.

  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of historical research and ensure that findings are presented in a thoughtful, respectful manner.

  • Organize and curate archives and historical records, making them accessible for future reference and research purposes.

  • Participate in community outreach efforts to share historical findings with the public, including through speaking engagements, exhibitions, and other educational events.

  • Maintain awareness of current research trends and best practices in historical preservation and research, continually improving methodologies.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in military history, particularly related to veterans, moral injury, and humanitarian crises.

  • Experience in historical research, including working with primary sources, interviews, and archival material.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex historical information in a clear and engaging manner.

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise, accurate narratives.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple research projects simultaneously.

  • Familiarity with archival tools and research methodologies, including databases, library resources, and historical preservation techniques.

  • Empathy and respect for the stories of veterans, understanding the sensitive nature of the events being documented.

  • Team-oriented with a collaborative spirit, working effectively with other departments within the foundation.

  • Passion for storytelling, with a commitment to honoring the experiences of veterans and ensuring their history is preserved for future generations.
