After a confusing start, LAR got a new mission to the southern, civilian side of HKIA. There they learned how precarious and tense the mission was. After spending a sleepless night in the dirt, Liam and most of the detachment were assigned to North Gate. They came face to face with their reason for being there as thousands of desperate Afghans pushed toward the gate, while Taliban fighters drove by, shooting their AKs in the air, seemingly egging the crowd forward to overwhelm the Marines. After that baptism, they moved to East Gate for what was supposed to be a twelve-hour shift. Nearly five days later, the gate was closed down in anticipation of an imminent attack, and they were allowed to rest....
